The Northern Children's Book Festival "Children from schools across the North Tyne Valley got the chance to meet illustrator and cartoonist, Steve Weatherill. As part of the Northern Children's Book Festival, Mr Weatherill, best known for the Baby Goz lift-the-flap books, dropped in to see children from Humshaugh, Greenhaugh, Kielder and West Woodburn 1st schools. During the visit, younger children helped to bring his characters to life by dressing up in a variety of specially made costumes, while older children focused on book creation and design. Head teacher, Angela Steele said: "this is a fantastic opportunity for the children to see how a storyline behind a book is developed. It really helps their speaking and listening exercises and adds an extra dimension to their writing." Hexham Courant Humshaugh First School "Steve Weatherill came to visit our school on Friday 17 November to talk about being an author and illustrator. He showed us how he made his books. Steve writes lots of different books like 'Baby Goz' and 'Not now Charlie!'. He also writes books for bigger children in the middle school like his history books about the Middle Ages, the Romans and an Egyptian Activity book were you can learn how to make things like castles and jewelled collars. He drew lots of pictures which we painted and made into a big display. We all got dressed up as different characters which really made the books come to life." by Ralph and Anastasia

| Baby Goz Activity Sessions For Children Aged 3 to 7 | |
Group size: 30 - 100 children The Goz play: We read the 1st Goz story, then the children act it out using the costumes and the karaoke machine. They become a living book. The stories can change and extra characters can be added depending on the size and length of the session. The idea is to give a spark to the children's imagination and creativity, so that afterwards they can make up their own stories and drawings in class. Click here for children's pictures. The 3 Little Puzzle Pigs: 5 children act out this version of the well known story with a lot of audience participation and the new Story Play Fold Away houses. Can get quite lively! For children aged 7 to 11 Talking about making books and writing stories using the flip-chart and storyboards to show how to get ideas, invent and develop characters etc. Working with the History craft series: Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Vikings, Middle Ages, Prehistoric.
