A big thank you to all the children, teachers and librarians who came to see me last week. Especially Knockahollet Primary, ( I wish we'd had more time) and McArthur Nursery of course.

We'll be returning to Northern Ireland for a week visiting schools and libraries.

Creative Fun in the Middle Ages
Creative Fun Middle Ages Activity Book by Sue and Steve Weatherill.

This book provides step-by-step instructions for 12 activities relating to the Middle Ages. A short explanation about the history accompanies each of the objects to be made. There is a lovely recipe on ‘How to make a Medieval Pudding’ (a fruit crumble!), which points out that the food to choose from would have to be seasonal as there were no freezers. Another activity is a game called ‘Merels’ dating from the Middle Ages, a bit like noughts and crosses but using counters.

This is a very practical book with some fun ideas that illustrate the changes that history brings. There is a glossary of ten key words at the back of the book, and 18 stencils of heraldic shapes and motifs that could give ideas for some interesting art work. It would be a useful book to put on the non-fiction shelf, so that children could gain a basic insight into the Middle Ages and use the clear pictures to make their own artefacts.

from November 11th until the 16th.

'The Northern Children's Book Festival is held for two weeks each November in schools and libraries across the north east of England. NCBF is Europe's largest children's book festival. This is the 24th NCBF. More than 40 of the UK's finest children's writers, poets, illustrators and storytellers are taking part this year. It's a fab line up - yet again!'

A BIG THANK YOU to all the librarians , teachers and children we met last week in Northern Ireland - Especially the McArthur Nursery School in Belfast and Redburn Primary School in Holywood and thanks to wee Paddy at St Mary's in Divis Street for looking after Goz.

I will be visiting schools and libraries in Northern Ireland.

I will be at Walsall Library with the Baby Goz Show for Bookstart Day, Friday October 5th.

To all the children, staff and parents that I met on Tuesday. What a great school!
